The Integrations of Islamic Patterns in Malaysian Contemporary Art

The National Cultural Congress which was held in 1971 has brought the idea of national identity into art and served as a guideline for Malaysian artists their creative process. In this context, Islam becomes one main elements representing our cultural identity. As result, Islamic patterns serve symbols styles that were applied most contemporary Malaysia to interpret connections between man, universe Creator. This phenomenon witnessed emergence many important interesting works created by major Muslim with various unique methods applying patterns. Consequently, objectives present study are explore style integrated artwork, examine strategies or used producing artwork finally, analyze philosophy concept being projected artwork. Works five significant namely Dato’ Syed Ahmad Jamal, Sulaiman Esa, Fathimah Chik, Mastura Abd Rahman, Khalid Yusof have been chosen Feldman’s approach criticism its methodology. indicates all 15 artworks from selected implement based on Malay heritage well influence teaching. Most motifs found studied directed such arabesque patterns, calligraphy, floral motif, geometrical pattern. also shows strategy is accordance four principles introduced Ismail al-Faruqi comprising repetition, stylization, denaturalization, abstraction. It hoped will create awareness among audiences importance significance art.
